Create Custom Interiors That Stop Traffic
Learn the process behind the interiors that win awards, drop jaws and don’t cost $40,000!
Hello, my name is Cate Culp, and I design and build classic Volkswagens.
Welcome to my hands-on Introduction to Custom Classic VW Interior Design and Creation course.
If you’re here you probably have a car and you want to redo the interior. Or you’re just really weird and want to learn how to do something you’ll never do.
Either way, I totally respect that.
I know I am, but who are you?
I am the multi-award winning designer of internet viral Volkswagens - Rose, Lhia, Audacity, Paisley and Charity.
I’ve got 40+ years of sewing experience, 20 years in the textiles industry, and zero patience for overpriced, boring-ass interiors.
Co-owner, Operations Manager, Project Manager, and Fabric Wrangler at MetalMorphosis Customs.
I really fucking hate beige.
Sadly, interiors are often an after thought when people are restoring or rebuilding a classic car. Many folks will invest the GDP of a developing nation into the paint, bodywork and engine of a car, and then throw whatever crumbs are left at the interior. This makes Aunty Cate very sad. And look, I get it, interiors can be expensive. We frequently see cars at the car shows we attend with interiors that cost upwards of $40,000, and that’s IF you can find someone to do it! Most shops have waiting lists that span months, if not years.
If you can do it yourself, not only will you save a shit-tonne of money, but you’ll have something truly unique. Creating a custom interior for your classic car is a great way to express your personality, elevate your car to a new level, and make it stand out to the judges at the next show.
Before you sign up, here’s 8 things you should know about this course:
1. This course will focus exclusively on classic Volkswagens, and for the most part show the process of creating a custom interior for a VW Beetle. Most of the principles included in this series can be adapted to other Volkswagens, and indeed other makes and models.
2. This course assumes you know the basics of how to sew and how to operate the sewing machine. I will not be going too deep into sewing 101. But I will tell you a bit about my machine and why I like it. And what you may (or may not) be able to do without an industrial walking foot machine.
3. If you don’t have the skills (or tools) to sew for yourself, this course will also be fairly useful to those of you who have purchased the ‘TMI Special’ and want to install it yourself. If you’ve watched any of my videos you probably know that I believe every time someone puts black basketweave vinyl in a Beetle, a unicorn dies. But if that’s what you can afford, then I guess we’ll excuse you. And you’ll probably find plenty of information in this course that will assist you in making sure you install everything the best way possible. (Unicorn killer)
4. I am not professionally trained in this industry, I have not been to school for upholstery. I am largely self taught. These videos will show you the way I do things. I can’t tell you if they are ‘technically’ correct, but I can show you what works for me
5. We’re going to be featuring our most popular build Rose in this series, so we’ll be discussing machine embroidery. If you don’t own an embroidery machine, fear not - you can skip the embroidery or send out your leather to be embroidered by someone else.
6. I’ll go over the tools and supplies I use on a daily basis, and we’ll discuss the best places to buy those supplies. I am based in the USA, so most of this information will relate to US based businesses.
7. This is, by no means, a fully comprehensive upholstery course. It would take me days if not weeks to go through every step of every component in an interior. This course is designed to give you a basic understanding of how to do the job.
8. Most importantly - I can’t teach skill. And a tutorial is not an alternative to practice. While I can teach you how I do things, I can’t give you the 40 years of sewing experience I have, or 20 years of knowledge gained in the textiles industry in just a couple of hours.
